- Adding, deleting, and replacing phonemes to change word
- Identifying and applying knowledge of word families, vowel combinations, and consonant blends to build and read words

- Demonstrating and using knowledge of parts of speech
and how they are used
- Using punctuation correctly
- Using an understanding of grammar to improve writing
- Identifying and using compound and complex sentences
