Algebra Tiles involve students in learning algebraic concepts, including adding and subtracting
polynomials, factoring trinomials, and the Zero Principle. Each tile represents the positive and
negative of a quantity: ±x, ±x2, and ±1. Grades 6 and up.

In 30 years of teaching, I have regularly used Algebra Tiles with 8th grade algebra through remedial introductory and intermediate algebra at the community college. With minimal introduction time and focus on positive numbers, tiles can provide a visual approach to distinguish the difference between length and area, add like terms, multiply and factor with the distributive property, multiply binomials, factor trinomials, and complete the square. Extensions to negative numbers with the tiles are possible and encouraged with younger learners but are not necessary for mature learners under a limited time frame.
