Simplify (2x+1)(y-3)

Step 1
1. Using the Algeblocks Quadrant Mat, place two x Blocks and a Unit Block on the Factor Track on the positive side of the vertical axis.
Step 2
2. Place one y Block in the Factor Track on the positive side of the horizontal axis and three Unit Blocks on the negative side.
Step 3
3. In Quadrant I, build a rectangle with width y and length 2x + 1. In Quadrant II, build a rectangle with width 3 and length 2x + 1.
Step 4
4. Remove the Factor Track and identify the remaining blocks on the Algeblocks Quadrant Mat: two xy Blocks and one y Block in Quadrant 1 and six x Blocks and three Unit Blocks in Quadrant II.
Solution: The two xy Blocks and y Block in Quadrant I along with the six x Blocks and three Unit Blocks in Quadrant II show the solution is 2xy – 6x + y – 3.
