VERNON HILLS, Ill. – Dec.
6, 2005 – Building upon the successful launch of the WorldScapes
series earlier this year, ETA/Cuisenaire today announced the publication
of 56 additional nonfiction Math and Science titles. Developed for grade
3-6 reading levels with interest levels as high as eighth grade, the new
WorldScapes texts strengthen students’ content knowledge with real-world
applications of math and science concepts in 25 different countries and cultures.
"With
the addition of these math and science titles, teachers can now use WorldScapes
to supplement literacy instruction and integrate content across all curriculum
areas," said Dennis Goldman, president, ETA/Cuisenaire. "These
books are not only high-interest, they are high impact, with amazing photography
shot on location around the world, and a variety of informational text features
that support development of critical and visual literacy skills."
The WorldScapes
nonfiction Math titles link mathematical skills and concepts, such as estimating
and identifying patterns to facts about a country’s history, environment,
or culture. For example, in "Magic Squares and More," students develop
algebraic and spatial thinking skills while learning about mathematical inventions
from China. In the title "Rainforest Math," students use facts
and figures about the Costa Rican rainforest to solve mathematical problems.
The WorldScapes
nonfiction Science titles explore life, physical, and earth science topics while
developing concepts and skills such as classifying, conducting experiments and
investigations, and organizing data. When reading, "Deserts are not Deserted," students
learn how animal species and people survive extreme temperatures up to 130 degrees
Fahrenheit in West Africa’s Sahara Desert. In the title "The
Greatest Wall of All," students explore how more than 2,000 years ago the
people of China used basic tools, pulleys, weights, arches, and ramps to build
the 2,150-mile Great Wall.
WorldScapes’ original
84 titles for Social Studies (photo essays), Language Arts (fiction), and History
(biographies) feature a range of genres and text types, showcase 25 countries,
and emphasize universal values such as kindness, courage, respect, and determination.
With five titles across five content areas for each country in the series, students
are able to make important text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections.
All titles
are accompanied by comprehensive teacher support, such as lesson plans featuring
discussion points during and after reading, suggestions for assessment, reproducible
blackline masters, and activities. Teacher’s Notes for the new titles also
provide suggestions for extending math and science learning. The series can be
used in a variety of instructional settings such as literature circles, paired
or independent reading, and small group instruction.
In early 2006, 40 new Math and Science titles exploring 19 countries will be
added to Vistas del mundo®, the Spanish-language counterpart to the WorldScapes
series. Vistas del mundo also includes 60 Social Studies, Language Arts, and
History titles.
